Plan a New Zealand Wine Trail Holiday

Wine growing in New Zealand is still evolving and new areas are planting vines and producing an ever broadening selection of wine varieties with often excellent results. Wine is now one of the New Zealand's main exports.

Plan your New Zealand Wine Trail Holiday allowing time to spend a few days in several wine regions. Many wineries have their own restaurants and the gourmet food is usually excellent, as the menus are planned to compliment their wines. Some wineries have diversified growing olives and/or other gourmet food specialties. Each has their own architectural style and beautiful scenic surrounds.

Many wineries are in areas featuring beaches, bush or mountains, arts and crafts, historic townships and other attractions for you to enjoy.

If you are not keen to drink and drive - join an organised Wine Trail Day Tour in each location, for a comprehensive wine experience. Or drive yourself on mini tours... tasting the wines and gourmet foods many regions produce.

Vary it with a Winery Cycle Tour in Hawkes Bay or the Kayaking Wine Tour to Omata Estate in the Bay of Islands - and you have the makings of a wonderfully varied and exciting holiday.

I have found that many wine makers love to chat and share their vast knowledge of the wines they lovingly craft...for it is a craft. New Zealander's are generally innovative and prepared to try new ideas. This shines through in some areas of their wine making too.

The areas listed could all be visited as part of a tour throughout New Zealand. Alternatively you could choose to just tour either the North Island or South Island sections. I have selected the main wine growing areas.......and a suggested route that takes you systematically through the country.

Kerikeri - Northland is not a major wine area but there are a few good wineries. Marsden Estate and Cottle Hill are two wineries well worth visiting in Kerikeri. Both also have good restaurants.

Auckland - Matakana - Waiheke Island -West Auckland- Clevedon - There are many areas around Auckland where wine growing is a feature.

Matakana is an hour north of the city and there are several good wineries here. Take a day or two and tour the area. With beautiful beaches, potteries, and Matakana township which has an excellent Farmers Market on a Saturday, there is plenty to fill your time in between wine tastings.
Waiheke Island has many excellent wineries with some acclaimed labels. Either do a Day Wine Tour or spend a few days on the island with a car. Some of the wineries are a little off the beaten track......with glorious views. You can pick up rental cars from the wharf or take your car across on the Sealink ferry.
West Auckland - is one of Auckland's oldest wine growing regions with many well established vineyards planted by the many Croatian families that emigrated to the area. Transport is essential. Kumeu, Henderson and Oratia are home to some of New Zealand's most well known labels. Artisan's Winery - Oratia has a great restaurant and their wines are supurb.
South Auckland does not have such a wide choice of wineries but there are a handful around Clevedon. - I recommend Vin Alto as an interesting winery. You can have a wine tasting or enjoy a degustation meal with wine to match, which is a fabulous experience with much of the produce...... even the venison grown on the property. Their limoncello liquor is delicious!

Hawkes Bay - is one of New Zealand's top wine growing regions with Chardonnay and Bordeaux style red wines their most widely produced. This area has wine, food, art trails and Art Deco Napier to keep any tourist happy for days! You will need transport to reach the many wineries which are spread out. For something different you can do a Bike Winery Tour. You will want to include some visits to the many gourmet food producers as you tour the region.

Gisborne - Known as the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand Gisborne has some excellent wines and wineries with the first grape vines planted as long ago as 1836.This is also an area producing internationally acclaimed gewertztraminer at Vinoptima.

Wairarapa - Martinborough - Best known for their excellent Pinot Noir, you could plan to stay a night or two and enjoy the gourmet food and wines in the region. Martinborough is a popular destination for a weekend break and wine tours being near to Wellington.

South Island

Marlborough - Nelson - Sauvignon Blanc is the trademark wine for this region and is considered by many internationally to be the best in the world - although their Pinot Noir is also becoming a flagship wine for the area. This region has much to keep you here for several days if you have time - with arts and crafts, hiking and kayaking the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, and beautiful beaches.

Canterbury - The oldest South Island wine area, Reisling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are some of the best wines in this region. Take a Wine Tour or drive yourself to Banks Peninsula or Waipara Valley. French Farm is a lovely winery for tasting and lunch.

Otago - This may be a relatively new wine growing area, and those who were the first to plant grapes here were told they were "mad"! However, they have had the last laugh as the wines in the region have won international acclaim. Pinot Noir and aromatic whites grow very well on the rocky hillsides. A wine tour will take you to several fascinating wineries from Waitiri Creek Winery based in an old Church to Gibbston Valley with it's wine cave.

With Queenstown and Wanaka central to the area, you will enjoy stunning scenery and find a plethora of exciting activities and attractions when you tire of wine tasting. Enjoy your New Zealand Wine Trail Holiday!

Cheap Pocketbike

Cheap pocket bike have all the same features of a normal pocket bike but are more affordable than a typical pocket bike. The cheap pocket bikes are available mostly in online auctions or resale marts or in sale outlets of foreign companies that mass-produce pocket bikes.

Formerly, pocket bikes were solely made by specialty manufacturers and sold at expensive prices. However, inexpensive pocket bikes enable more individuals to have access to this form of transportation. Inexpensive pocket bikes are developed with many of the features similar to regular bikes, such as disc brakes in the front and rear, racing tires, fairings, swing arms, etc.

Now, the U.S. pocket bike market has been taken over by cheap pocket bikes from Asia and abroad. However, there are certain limitations to the cheap bikes imported from Asia and abroad - though these bikes resemble well-known branded bikes, there is no reliable source for parts. And moreover, these bikes have also been known to easily rupture or crack, and local companies do not offer warranties and/or after-sales service or repairs.

Though cheap pocket bikes have drawbacks, they have stormed the Internet and the pocket bikes market. The easiest way to buy a cheap pocket bike is on the Internet. These cheap pocket bikes can go at speeds of up to 50 miles/h. The cheap pocket bike segment does not, however, as extensive a selection as the normal pocket bikes. On the other hand, cheap pocket bikes offer the fun, excitement, style, and features of a normal pocket bike at a relatively affordable price.

Travel to New Zealand - What is the Best Time of Year to Go to New Zealand?

Of all the questions I that are put to me, the most difficult question is "When is the best time to go to New Zealand?" Without knowing what your interests are, or what you want to do, it is very hard to answer. The question may be "When is the best weather in New Zealand?" However the answer may change depending on what your interests are. So perhaps you want to come and go hiking, fishing or skiing. Maybe you are interested in gardening, or just want to do a self drive holiday. All of these will give a different answer to the question "What is the best time of year to visit New Zealand".

In order to find out what is the best time to travel to New Zealand, you should first decide the places you wish to visit; as well as the attractions, activities or tours that you would like to do. Once you know this, it is a lot easier decide when to visit New Zealand.

The climate in New Zealand is fairly mild, so it makes a great year round destination to visit. Each season in New Zealand has an appeal all of its own. Although the weather in New Zealand over summer (December to February) is of course warmer; travelling over this period is not necessarily the best choice, or due to other obligations is sometimes not possible.

New Zealand's weather is very changeable, as a result this means that even over summer there are always quite a few cooler and wetter days. As far as rainfall goes, over winter (June to August) the North Island of New Zealand is a little wetter than the rest of the year; whilst the South Island is slightly drier. Though there is less sunshine, there are still many sunny days over winter. The highest rainfall falls generally in the Fiordland and West Coast regions of the South Island of New Zealand; whilst the areas with the greatest sunshine are Nelson and Marlborough in the South Island; as well as Hawkes Bay and the Bay of Plenty in the North Island.

Coming prepared

In all seasons you should come prepared for cooler and wetter weather. We suggest that at all times of the year you dress in layers. It is better to bring a number of warm thinner layers, rather than one thick pullover, as well as a good quality waterproof jacket. This allows you to quickly adjust to sudden changes in climate each day by adding or removing layers. Nevertheless all year round, you should also be ready for sunny days, so you should always bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen - you may need them!

Summer in New Zealand - December to February

Visiting New Zealand in summer allows you be there during New Zealand's warmest and best weather. However if you are looking for a quiet summer holiday, then perhaps come some other time! Summer is the peak season for tourists in New Zealand, and as a result it gets very busy. Accommodation, transport and activities do require booking ahead; and prices tend to be substantially higher.

Autumn (Fall) in New Zealand - March to May

Travel to New Zealand in autumn brings with it the chance to see the magnificent kaleidoscope of colours, as the leaves on the trees and plants change to dramatic russet browns, reds and golden shades. To see these changes at its vibrant best, then visit Wanaka and the Otago region of New Zealand in the South Island; or Hawkes Bay in New Zealand's North Island. If you are looking at a self drive holiday, then travel any time after Easter, and the roads and number of other tourists are always reduced; so autumn is always one of the best times to travel to New Zealand.

Winter in New Zealand - June to August

Winter in New Zealand is when the mountains get their annual coating of snow, and the skiers come out to play! There is a great choice of Ski Areas in New Zealand to choose from, for both advanced skiers and the first time novice. Turoa and Whakapapa Ski Areas in Tongariro National Park are extremely popular with skiers from Auckland in the North Island. Whereas in the South Island you can ski to your hearts content in Queenstown, Wanaka, Mt Hutt or one of the many small club ski areas. The ski season normally runs from June to early October, though Whakapapa's season often goes for much longer.

Skiing is often combined with a self-drive holiday. As there is very little traffic on the roads, and snow falls are generally in the mountains, driving is normally very easy. Snow in the valleys normally only occurs with the heaviest snow falls.

The North Island in winter is colder and a little wetter than the rest of the year. However the South Island is generally a little drier, with clear skies and crisp winter nights.

Spring in New Zealand - September to November

Spring is a great time of year to visit New Zealand. The mountains still have their covering of snow, with the ski season coming to a close in early October. The annual spring melt, makes it a popular time for adventure seekers to go white water rafting in the swollen rivers. Spring is also a popular time to visit New Zealand, with the new growth and buds bursting into flower. In the North Island gardeners flock to Taranaki for the annual Rhododendron and Garden Festival; or alternatively travel to the Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay to see the magnificent blossom in flower.

In the South Island you soon learn why Christchurch is called the "Garden City", as the parks and gardens are alive with colour. A visit to Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens is a must. Further south Dunedin has many historic gardens including Larnach Castle, Olveston House and Glenfalloch Woodland Gardens. Nearby is Alexandra where you can see the blossom and the annual spring festival.

Best Time for New Zealand Self Drive Holidays

If you can avoid the annual summer rush to New Zealand, then you will always find your New Zealand self drive holiday to be much more relaxed, and save you money in the pocket! This particularly applies to Motorhome and Campervan Rental, where costs reduce dramatically the further you move your travel from the December to February high season. As well as substantially lower rates, rental companies often encourage travel with extra specials over the low season between May and September.

Plan your New Zealand South Island independent tourist itinerary

When you start to plan your New Zealand holiday it throws up some difficult questions. I have often been asked which I like best, the North Island or the South Island. That is quite a difficult question, as living in a location is different to seeing it as a tourist. Scenically they are very different and both lovely.

However, if you have limited time for your New Zealand holiday I would definitely recommend the South Island as your choice. To really do justice to the South Island, you need 4-5 weeks. This allows you to take time to enjoy the many activities. You could spend a lot more time, if you are intending to do some of the long hikes such as the Milford Track, Heaphy Track, or go to some of the remoter areas. But usually choices have to be made.

The Best of the South Island Independent Tour Route

Some people may adapt this and manage a rushed New Zealand holiday in two weeks, but will have to reduce the suggested route further, or have quicker stops in some areas. This is itineray will take about 3 weeks , travelling time.

The route I would suggest that gives you the best overall coverage of the South Island, would start from Christchurch, the only international airport. This semi circular route can of course be driven in the opposite direction.

o Drive north to Kaikoura, for whale watching, swimming with dolphins and great crayfish!

o Hanmer Springs will make a nice break for a swim in the thermal hot pools.

o Carry Nelson. Take 2-3 days here to enjoy the beaches - do not miss the beautiful golden Kaiteriteri, check out some wineries, arts and crafts, and hiking or kayaking Abel Tasman National Park.

O Blenheim, Marlborough, the center of wine - where our famous New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc grows best.

Or Nelson Lakes - are very scenic, with day trips, many in the region.

Pass or Murchison on the West Coast.

O Karamea - worth at the northern tip of RiveIf you have time - it will double again.

O Greymouth - Shanty Town is an excitement to children with its gold mining town replica.

O Punakaiki Pancake Rocks - are a unique spectacle. The stratified rocks are spectacular with the sea pounding and blowholes. Nikau forest is also an unusual spectacle, what a touch of the tropical zone.

O Hokitika - has glass bubbles, green stone carving, crafts, and is located directly on the beach.

Or for the Shrine Whataroa Kotuku - NewNew Zealand white heron - a good travel season in the only white heron in New Zealand.

Or Gillespie's Beach, 25 km north of Fox Glacier is a good beach walk to see the seals. There are about 1500 which is a show of smell - and! But worth it! You must allow several hours.

Or Fox Glacier

or Franz Joseph Glacier - you want to spend a couple of days in this area glaciers really a good experience. You can make excursions on the ice creamglaciers, and enjoy the beautiful landscape.

O Haast Pass to Lake Wanaka, beautiful sleep.

From Wanaka or across the range Crown if it were a challenging but very scenic drive around Lake Dunstan or to go beyond Queenstown

O Te Anau - From here you can go to

Or Milford Sound

Or doubts Sounds - this is a great boat tour of the wildlife

O-Alternative Base in Queenstown and take a ride to Milford Sound

O Queenstown - If you only a very limited time for your vacation then New Zealand Queenstown is the place to go. Voted one of World's Top 10 destinations for 2008, it is necessary, the day plans to do a lot of time travel - The Lord of visits Rings, Arrowtown try some extreme sports - bungee jumping, Shotover Jet Boat, 4WD, old city mining of gold, Skippers Canyon, Jet Boating, heli-skiing, take the historic Earnslaw "Boot to Walter Peak Sheep Station Lake Wakatipu .. The choices are fertile.> Adventure activities are an important area, the scenery breathtaking. There is something for everyone in this fabulous part of the country.

Options or - Mount Cook Twizel when time is short, and then to Dunedin to Mount Cook.

O Twizel - once a city built for workers of the power plant construction has become a popular center for those who do many outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains.

O Queenstown to Dunedin. I have to go a day in the Otago Peninsula inAlbatross Colony and Larnaca visit the Castle. You can even penguins.

East Coast road trip or the Moeraki Boulders Moeraki visit the seafood restaurant on the roadside on the way to

O Mt Cook - Aoraki or - the highest mountain in New Zealand. Attracts many climbers - but must be lived. Unfortunately, claimed many lives. Hiking and outdoor activities can be occupied for several days, if you're interested. On the way to Christchurch

Or Lake Tekapo - see the little stone churchShepherd and monument overlooking Lake Tekapo in the middle of the MacKenzie country.

Arriving in Christchurch.

This path may be proposed as a route will be brought south of Invercargill, where a week or two to have. But the road above will be packaged in a stunning landscape, Active holidays. You can also customize the best in the North Island and the beginning of the circuit in Nelson.
