Newbury-Berkshire - A Great Place to Live

Newbury - Berkshire - is a very popular town found almost on the crossroads between the West Country and London, and the Midlands and the South Coast. Many of Southern England's main urban centres are within an hours drive. It has a beautiful setting on the edge of the Thames Valley.

Its prime location has resulted in it being a highly sought after location. Today the real estate prices are some of the most expensive that can be found anywhere in the British Isles. Its close proximity to London has made it an ideal residential location for commuters. There has been a large influx of technology based companies and this has also added to the demand for property.

Newbury is quickly evolving from being a quiet rural market town to a thriving and sophisticated urban region. The influx of people have also brought an exciting arts scene that is dominated by theatres, arts festivals, as well as fine dining options and bars and clubs. There is also a famous racecourse that hosts important events from the racing calendar.

There has not been so much development in terms of shopping; many people will still travel to the large malls and shopping centres that are found in the nearby towns of Swindon, Basingstoke, and Reading.

Historically, the town has had periods of rapid growth previously. Since being founded by Norman Knights 1000 years ago, the town first developed during the middle ages when it was a thriving textile centre. Its convenient location between the Roman centres of London and Bath also resulted in it being a resting point on the journey.

Within the UK, the town is famous as being a centre of political protests. As many as 40, 000 women spent time camped out at the nearby Greenham Common airbase in the 1960s when America stored nuclear missiles at the location.
